About this work
A large multi-winged castle with steep dormered roofs, a tall clock tower, and a slender turret runs along the crest of a steep rocky cliff. Conifers and bare trees cling to the rock face and the slope below, where a stone embankment and a strip of green lawn border a calm, dark river reflecting the fortress faintly.
A muted palette of buff stone, terracotta roofs, and grey sky under flat, overcast light gives the scene a subdued, heavy mood. Soft pastel strokes blend the cliff face and foliage into hazy masses, while finer marks pick out windows and gables, and the still water below deepens the quiet, imposing atmosphere.
