About this work
A cluster of trees in various stages of autumn undress lines a grassy bank that curves around a small pond and stream in the foreground. Some trunks still hold clusters of golden-orange leaves, while others stand nearly bare against a pale, clouded sky, their branches sketched in fine dark lines. A worn path winds along the water's edge toward the middle distance.
Loose, translucent washes of ochre, olive and grey build the foliage and clouded light, letting the white paper glow through for highlights. Fine dry brushwork defines the bare branches, and the muted, damp palette gives the scene a quiet, slightly melancholic hush typical of late autumn.
