About this work
A narrow river curves from the foreground into the distance, bordered by grassy banks and dense stands of autumn trees in orange, gold and brown. A gravel path winds along the left bank toward a small domed pavilion roof just visible above the treetops, while bare dark branches and fallen leaves punctuate the colored foliage on both sides.
Soft, wet washes of ochre, rust and olive green blend into one another to build the mass of trees, with their colors echoed in loose reflections on the water's still surface. The sky and background are kept pale and hazy, throwing the warm foreground into relief. Damp, atmospheric brushwork gives the whole view a muted, melancholy hush typical of late autumn light.
