About this work
Four robed, bearded men stand in a row against a dark ground, heads bowed or turned aside beneath a wash of light. Below a rocky ledge at their feet, a horned goat, a long serpent, a fox and a small mouse share the same patch of bare ground, none menacing the others.
Dense parallel hatching and stippled crayon build the figures' robes into deep black shapes edged with sharp white highlights, while the animals below are drawn with the same wiry, textured line. The stark contrast between looming darkness and lit contours gives the print a hushed, contemplative gravity.
