About this work
A single figure crouches on the ground with knees drawn up, head tilted back, mouth open and eyes rolled upward in apparent distress. The hands press together and rest on one raised knee, while a striped, woven sash crosses the torso over a loosely draped tunic, one sandaled foot extending toward the viewer.
Vigorous crayon strokes carve deep shadows into the twisted neck and straining shoulders, while the drapery is built from long, parallel hatching. The stark white of the upturned face against the black ground heightens the sense of physical and emotional strain, giving the print an intense, almost convulsive energy.
