About this work
A hooded mother sits on bare ground, holding a small child close against her chest, both faces turned inward. Above them loom the oversized wheel, undercarriage and hind legs of a horse-drawn chariot, filling the upper half of the sheet. To the right, a line of small figures files away across an open plain toward the horizon.
Dense black lithographic crayon builds a velvety darkness in the chariot and horse, set against finer hatching on the mother and child below. Uneven light picks out drapery folds and the distant walkers, while the machinery above stays near-silhouette, giving the scene a heavy, foreboding mood.
