About this work
Four riders occupy a steep, overlapping composition: at center a gaunt archer draws a longbow astride a rearing horse; at left another emaciated figure rides a mule-like animal, raising a horn; below, a small nude figure brandishes a short sword; and at lower right a full skeleton rides a horse with a scythe over its shoulder. The figures and animals pile diagonally across the sheet in a tumbling arrangement.
Worked entirely in black and white through dense cross-hatching and stippling, the riders and horses appear as pale shapes against a heavily inked ground. Fine engraved lines model muscle, bone, and horsehide with meticulous detail. The crowded, tumbling composition and skeletal imagery give the print a grim, foreboding charge.
