About this work
A row of tall, mature trees with thick, gnarled trunks leans in from the left, their canopies of yellow-green autumn leaves spreading across most of the upper composition. Below, a stone balustrade and paved embankment run alongside a canal or river, with low buildings and a bridge-like structure visible on the far bank. A building with reddish walls anchors the lower left corner.
Warm ochre, olive, and gold washes describe the foliage in loose, overlapping strokes, set against cooler grays and greens for the water and stonework. Dark, dry-brush lines pick out the twisting trunks and branches. Light filters through the canopy in patches of pale sky, giving the scene a mellow, quiet autumn atmosphere along the embankment.
