About this work

Several sailing vessels with tall bare masts and rigging are moored close together in a harbor basin, their hulls reflected in the grey water. Small open rowboats float in the foreground, while a row of tall waterfront buildings, including a taller modern block, lines the far shore.

A muted palette of grey, blue-green, and ochre captures an overcast harbor day, the water rendered in broad, choppy brushstrokes. The dense rigging and reflections are built up with quick, textured touches, giving the port a still, workaday, slightly hazy atmosphere.
