About this work
The composition looks from a curving granite embankment down toward the wide Neva River. A lone figure sits at the tip of the stone parapet, legs dangling toward the water, near a small mooring post with iron rings. Across the river, the gilded dome of Saint Isaac's Cathedral and a long pale building rise faintly through the haze, with the far shoreline and greenery beyond.
Cool violet-blues dominate the water, broken into short, choppy strokes that catch scattered light and give the surface a restless shimmer. The pink-grey granite is rendered in warmer, softer tones, with long diagonal shadows stretching across the paving. Loose, textured brushwork throughout creates an airy, quiet mood typical of an overcast riverside afternoon.
