About this work
Figures move along a paved embankment and across a low stone bridge spanning a canal, with rows of pastel-colored apartment buildings and a spired tower receding into the distance. Bare trees and lampposts punctuate the street, and reflections of the buildings and passers-by shimmer faintly on the wet pavement.
Broken brushwork in soft pink, ochre, and grey-blue creates a diffused, autumnal light that unifies sky, stone, and water. The loose, flickering touches of paint and blurred silhouettes of the pedestrians give the view an airy, impressionistic calm, evoking a quiet moment on a damp city morning.
