About this work
A green rowboat is tied alongside a low wooden dock that juts into a calm lake, with a small figure in a red garment standing at its edge. Behind the dock, dense trees and shrubs partly screen a small house on the left bank, while the far shore recedes into soft green hills and clustered trees on the right.
The composition is topped by a large mass of golden-yellow clouds that dominate the upper half of the canvas, their warm light reflected in soft, broken strokes across the lake's surface. Cooler blue breaks through at the top edge of the sky, while the dock, boat and foliage are painted in darker, subdued greens and browns, giving a calm, glowing close-of-day mood.
