About this work
Rows of multicolored buildings—pink, ochre, blue-grey—line both banks of a wide river dusted with snow, their rooftops capped in white. A low stone bridge with ornate lamp posts spans the water in the middle distance, and a small dark figure walks a dog across the frozen surface near the foreground, the only signs of life in the wintry quiet.
Soft pastel and oil marks in dusty pink, lilac, ochre, and grey-white are dragged and blended to suggest falling wet snow and a hazy, overcast sky. Forms soften and blur toward the edges, light diffusing evenly across the composition, and the muted, chalky palette gives the scene a hushed, melancholic winter stillness.
