About this work
A tall, blank-walled apartment building fills most of the composition, its gable rising above a lower wing pierced with rows of windows. At street level a low wall carries fragments of blue-painted graffiti, partly legible as Cyrillic letters. A small figure with a dog stands near a gap in the wall, dwarfed above, with wet ground and patches of snow in the foreground.
The building is painted in a soft, chalky range of rose, mauve, grey and cream, in thick, dragged strokes that leave visible ridges of paint across the wall's surface. Cooler grey-blue fills the sky and shadowed edges, while warmer pink catches fading light on the facade. Heavy impasto and a muted, overcast palette lend the scene quiet, melancholic weight.
