About this work

Bare birches and other leafless trees screen a red-brick building topped by a green spire and steep gabled roof, with a plain red house beside it and a hazy row of rooftops further back. Two small figures walk along a pale, snow-flecked path that cuts through the empty park in the foreground, the ground patched with the first thin snow.

A muted palette of greys, browns and dull greens conveys the damp chill of late autumn, warmed only by faint pink light in the sky. Thin, nervous strokes describe the bare branches, while broader touches build the brick walls and roof. The empty park and soft, fading light give the scene a quiet, melancholic stillness.
