About this work
Pink, cream and pale-blue facades line a snow-dusted embankment that curves toward a low arched bridge with iron lamp posts; the far bank and rooftops blur into fog, and dark patches of open water show through the snow-covered quay in the foreground.
Oil is worked with pastel into a soft, chalky surface, the palette narrowed to greys, dusty pink and ochre under a flat overcast sky. Contours are smudged and edges left unresolved, mimicking wet snow drifting through the air and producing a quiet, muffled winter atmosphere.
