About this work
A bearded, balding man's head fills the entire sheet in close-up, seen almost frontally. Deep furrows cross the high forehead, the eyes are large, dark and directly engaged with the viewer, and a thick beard and moustache cover the lower half of the face. Prominent ears and loosely modelled hair frame the composition on either side.
The portrait is worked entirely in ink, built from dense crosshatching and loose, scratchy strokes over the white paper, with a cool blue-black wash deepening the shadows around the eyes and beard. Bright, untouched paper stands for the lit planes of brow and cheek, producing strong contrast and a raw, unfinished energy. The handling is expressionist, giving the sitter an intense, searching stare.
