Chickens. Evening

Three hens -- one rust-red, one black, one white with dark speckles -- stand side by side on a narrow green ledge. Behind them, tall bare stems rise above their heads, each topped with a large, dried, disc-shaped seed pod. A hazy line of dark hills and pale evening sky fill the background.

Shapes are simplified and flattened, with firm outlines and broad areas of colour rather than blended tones, giving the scene a stylised, decorative quality. Muted greys and browns dominate the sky and land, set off by the warm rust and orange of the hens and pods. Pairing ordinary farmyard birds with the oversized seed heads gives the quiet dusk scene a strange, faintly surreal charm.
