About this work
A dense lattice of twisted golden branches fills a square red field, framing small arched panels painted like stained-glass icons of angels, saints and gothic towers. Two women in Renaissance dress and headdresses stand in profile at the lower corners, hands clasped in prayer, while small songbirds, a white dove in flight, and clusters of pink roses are scattered through the branches.
The scarlet ground glows against the gold-ochre lattice and jewel-blue icon inserts, the surface built up with a rough, woven texture suggesting straw or wire pressed into the paint. The tapestry-like, all-over design and glinting inserts give the work a mysterious, devotional feel, like a coded relic or illuminated letter.
