About this work
Steep white gable walls and dark tiled roofs of a traditional water town crowd along a canal; a red stone arch bridge spans the water at center, its reflection completing a full circle below. Red lanterns hang at doorways, two small figures walk along the banks, and a wooden boat is moored at the lower left beneath a red autumn tree.
A deep indigo night sky, flecked with white specks suggesting mist or stars, sets off the warm reds and ochres of the bridge and lanterns against cool blue-white walls. Thick, encrusted impasto covers the whole surface, giving it a mosaic-like, jeweled texture; the effect is stylized, hushed, and quietly mysterious.
