About this work
A square, richly gilded composition builds spires, crenellated towers and pointed arches from interwoven, straw-textured branches, forming a fantastical golden citadel. Small stained-glass-like window scenes and red-tiled roofs appear among the branches, and four human faces - a red-haired child, two women in profile, and a bearded elder - are set into the structure alongside perched birds and clusters of pink roses.
An overall gold and ochre tonality, built up with a rough, straw-or-wire texture, sits against a cobalt-blue ground and border. The dense, all-over patterning has no single focal point, producing a mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere closer to a devotional relief or fairy-tale citadel than any marine subject.
