About this work
The central panel shows a chestnut horse and a cloaked young figure standing among pink and violet wildflowers under a deep blue night sky with a yellow horizon glow; a small fire glimmers at their feet. Smaller panels set into the carved wooden frame add a green summer grove, a curled sleeping fox, a lakeside birch with birds, and a face emerging from leaves.
Night blues and yellows in the center contrast with the brighter greens of the flanking daylight scenes, all built with loose, textured brushwork and simplified forms typical of decorative panel painting. The carved frame with stylized ornament ties the separate images together, giving the whole an atmosphere of folk myth and quiet nocturnal mystery.
