About this work
A dark industrial vessel with cranes and rigging is moored along a stone embankment in the foreground, with tiny figures walking the quay at left. Beyond it a wide river opens toward a long low bridge, and further still a gilded dome and a thin spire rise faintly on the horizon.
The whole scene is bathed in a soft, near-monochrome haze of pale blue, grey and cream, with the water rendered in loose horizontal strokes that catch faint light. Architectural details dissolve into mist, giving the composition an airy, tranquil morning stillness.
