About this work
Slender white birch trunks rise close to the viewer along the near bank of a dark, still river. Behind them, a low rise covered in rust-orange dry grass and shrubs slopes down to the water, where scattered fragments of melting ice float near the shore and a pale strip of open water stretches toward a distant tree line.
Deep indigo and near-black water is set against warm ochre, rust and cream tones in the grass and bark, creating a strong seasonal contrast. Brushwork is quick and textured, with vertical strokes for the trunks and broken color in the foliage. The scene carries a cool, quiet stillness of early spring or late autumn thaw.
