About this work
The gold dome and colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral rise above a row of classical facades along a river embankment. Dark silhouettes of naval ships and boats crowd the water below, while a loose scattering of tiny figures moves along the quay in the foreground, suggesting a festive gathering by the shore.
Loose, heavily textured brushwork in thick impasto builds the architecture and water from grey, cream, ochre and charcoal tones under a soft overcast sky. Reflections break into broken strokes of white and grey on the river's surface, and the crowd is rendered as quick daubs of color, giving the scene a bustling, atmospheric feel typical of an urban plein-air impression.
