About this work

A low stone bridge with a railing spans a frozen canal, leading toward a cluster of ochre and cream buildings partly hidden behind snow-covered trees. A single small reddish figure crosses the bridge, the only sign of movement in an otherwise still scene. Heavy snow coats the parapet, the riverbank and the branches overhead, whitening the whole foreground.

Warm rust and gold tones in the buildings and trees stand out against the cool greys and whites of the snow and sky, with touches of pink in the clouds above. The paint is worked in thick, knife-laid patches, giving the snow and foliage a rough, tactile surface rather than a smooth finish. The quiet bridge crossing and muted winter light lend the small scene a calm, wistful mood.
