About this work
A cluster of tall, leafless deciduous trees dominates a park lawn, their gnarled trunks and tangled bare branches set against a pale blue sky. Through the screen of trunks a light-colored building is faintly visible at left, while an open green lawn with long cast shadows stretches across the foreground; no figures or guards appear anywhere in the scene.
Dappled sunlight is rendered in loose, broken strokes of ochre, lavender and grey across the bark and branches, with fresh green brushwork in the grass suggesting early spring. The handling is loose and textured, built from visible directional strokes that give the quiet park a bright, airy calm.
