About this work
A rounded green hill dominates the right two-thirds of a wide horizontal view, its grassy slope dropping to a pale river that curves through the middle ground; a wooded far bank with autumn-toned patches rises beyond, and in the foreground a row of log houses with steep dark gabled roofs lines the near shore among a few small trees.
The palette is dominated by muted greens, ochre and gray, with a soft pinkish haze in the overcast sky; paint is applied in broad, flat, block-like strokes that simplify the planes of hill and field, giving the scene a quiet, damp, subdued calm.
