About this work
A dense screen of leafless, gnarled trees occupies the foreground of a garden, their trunks and looping branches crossing in front of a pale ochre classical building with tall arched windows visible in the gaps. A worn dirt path curves from the lower foreground toward a small doorway at the building's base, flanked by patches of green grass and scattered fallen leaves.
Cool greys and soft blue-whites define the clouded sky, set against warm ochre walls and olive-brown trunks rendered in quick, calligraphic strokes. Thicker dabs of white and pink catch light on the branches and path, while the loose, sketch-like handling throughout gives the scene an airy, quiet, slightly damp early-season feel.
