About this work
A wide, arched stone bridge spans the river in the middle distance, a white tour boat passing beneath its central arch. Rose-colored and ochre buildings line the embankment behind it, and at the far end of the bridge a bronze equestrian statue is silhouetted against the sky, while pedestrians walk along a tree-shaded quay on the right.
Warm terracotta and pink tones in the bridge and facades play against a soft grey-lavender sky and olive-brown river water flecked with reflected light. Brushwork is loose and broken, dissolving figures, foliage, and stonework into patches of color that convey the mellow, unhurried atmosphere of a city evening.
