About this work

Two women stand at an ornate stone balustrade along a canal, one in a pink coat, looking down toward the water where a small item rests at their feet. Bare, budding trees line both embankments, framing a view toward a low arched bridge and a row of pastel and yellow buildings with a white-columned facade further along the bank.

Fresh greens just emerging on the branches contrast with the still-bare gray limbs, while warm yellow and ochre buildings glow under a bright, partly clouded sky. Loose, dabbed brushwork renders the foliage and rippled water reflections with a light touch. The clear daylight and new growth give the scene a fresh, early-spring calm.
