About this work
Bare trees with dark tangled branches rise in front of tall ochre and brick-toned courtyard walls, their trunks crossing a weathered shed with a snow-capped roof. Snow covers the ground and ledges, and a small doorway opens into shadow at the base of the buildings, while a strip of grey sky shows through the branches above.
Warm ochre, rust, and dull red wall tones are set against cool grey-white snow and sky, applied with loose, energetic brushstrokes that leave the canvas weave visible. The tree trunks are painted in near-black silhouette, giving the composition graphic structure, and the overall effect is a hushed, wintry corner of a city courtyard.
