About this work
A nude winged figure stands at right, one hand gripping a heavy chain looped around a multi-horned, scaled beast crouched at his feet, the other hand holding a large key. Behind them, dark cross-barred window arches admit a glow of orange and red light, suggesting flames beyond the vaulted stone chamber that encloses the scene.
Heavy black cross-hatching models the vaulted interior and the angel's musculature, set against warm ochre and rust washes bleeding through the grated openings. The contrast between the tightly worked dark architecture and the softly tinted fire gives the confinement scene a tense, subdued charge.
