About this work

A bearded nude man is thrown backward with his legs splayed flat across the page and his torso twisted upward, one arm reaching out while the other braces against the ground. His head is tipped back and his hair flies loose, with dark red marks streaked around his eyes and down his chest and arm.

The figure is built from loose, scratchy ink lines over a soft grey tonal ground, with the red confined to a few deliberate strokes at the head and torso, reading unmistakably as fresh wounds. The economy of line and the sprawled, twisting pose give the drawing a raw, anguished energy, fitting a moment of self-inflicted violence and despair.
