About this work
A heavyset rider mounted on a dark horse raises a curved blade overhead at left, while a second horse rears riderless at center among a crush of nude and lightly draped figures grappling, stabbing and collapsing across the foreground; a severed, bloodied head lies at bottom center, and at right a line of armed figures with shields and spears rushes into the melee beneath a red-streaked sky.
Executed in etching with washes of pink, ochre and rust over dense pen hatching, the composition piles bodies into a single frieze-like knot of violence; the sparse red sky and blood-red accents on flesh punctuate the muted palette, and the frantic, overlapping contour lines give the scene a convulsive, wartime energy.
