About this work
A uniformed rider in green sits astride a large white horse at the center, reins and whip in hand, while ranks of helmeted soldiers march at left beside sketched tanks and artillery. To the right, a burning orange-red disc encloses a huddled crowd of tiny figures, and below it more people rush forward carrying red flags and banners.
The horse and rider are rendered in confident etched line touched with pale ochre and rust, set against loosely sketched crowds left mostly in bare pencil-like contour, with red, yellow and blue washes marking flames, banners and sky. The mix of finished central figures and rougher surrounding sketch gives the scene a sense of onrushing, unfinished momentum.
