About this work

A nude male figure is shown from behind and in profile, arms raised and bound above his head, a white cloth knotted at his hips and small red wounds on his side and thigh. Behind him the ground splits in two: cool grey drips on the left and a dark, encrusted red field scattered with clotted textures on the right, with a crown of thorns resting at the lower corner.

The pale, smoothly modeled body contrasts with the rough, built-up impasto of the surrounding acrylic ground, which reads almost as scarred flesh or spattered blood. The stark division between cool grey and burnt red, and the figure's strained, upward-pulled pose, give the panel a raw, suffering intensity.
