About this work
A grid of nude figures fills the sheet in varied poses of pain and collapse: bodies bent double, arms shielding faces, hands pressed to head or torso, a squatting infant, and several figures marked with raw red patches suggesting open sores or wounds. A narrow band of flame-colored sky with roiling yellow and red streaks runs along the top edge, separate from the figure studies below.
Each body is built from fine etched contour and cross-hatching, then given loose washes of ochre, olive-green, and rust-red that model flesh unevenly, leaving some figures pale and others heavily tinted. The scattered, study-sheet arrangement and raw color patches convey bodily affliction rather than a single continuous scene.
