About this work

A group of gaunt men in striped prison uniforms with numbered patches and shaved, skull-like heads crowd together in a dim barracks room. One figure hands over a paper-wrapped loaf of bread while others lean in to watch, and a bare bulb hangs from the ceiling lighting the huddle.

Dense black ink cross-hatching typical of etching carves harsh contrast into hollow cheeks and sunken eyes, the crowded composition pressing figures close together. The stark, claustrophobic lighting and gaunt faces convey suffering and quiet endurance.
