About this work

A hooded figure leans over a fallen man, gently supporting his head and gazing down at his still face. The dead man's features are pale and marked with wounds, his hair matted, while the mourner's face is caught in a shaft of light within an otherwise dark, enveloping space.

Deep ultramarine and near-black tones cover almost the entire canvas, interrupted by pale, roughly scumbled highlights on the two faces. Thick impasto and dragged brushstrokes give the surface a raw, unfinished urgency, concentrating attention on the quiet exchange of grief between the figures.
