About this work
A bearded man's head and shoulders take shape out of a nearly black ground, one eye and part of the nose caught in pale light while the rest of the face dissolves into surrounding shadow and streaked canvas.
Applied with loaded brush and knife, the surface is built from scraped browns, ochres and near-blacks with occasional cool blue-green notes and a rough patch of red near the chin. Light falls unevenly across cheekbone and brow, giving the head a brooding, unresolved presence.
