About this work
A man's head and shoulders emerge from a dark, undefined background, his face turned slightly with mouth open and eyes gazing past the viewer. His nose appears swollen and misshapen, and rough, ill-fitting dark clothing with a raised collar covers his shoulders, blending into the surrounding shadow.
The palette is dominated by muddy browns, ochres and near-black, with the face picked out in patches of pale flesh tone, pink and sickly yellow-green under raking light. Paint is applied in loose, broken strokes and visible palette-knife marks, giving the portrait a raw, unsettled, somber intensity.
