About this work

A tight crowd of gaunt prisoners in dark padded coats and caps stands together, each marked with a numbered tag on the chest and a band across the forehead. In the foreground one man leans in to receive a light for a cigarette from another, their faces lit by the small flame. Behind them a barbed-wire fence, a wooden watchtower, and two distant figures under a floodlight stand out against a glowing orange horizon.

A cold blue-green palette dominates the crowd of exhausted faces, broken only by the warm flare of the match and the burning sky. Angular, expressive brushwork models hollow cheeks and heavy shadow, giving the scene a bleak, oppressive weight.
