About this work
A single hooded figure occupies the whole canvas, head bent forward and almost entirely hidden behind a raised hand pressed over the face. A pale, light-catching cloth drapes over the head and down the shoulders, its folds echoing the gesture of grief below. The background is an undifferentiated dark field streaked with thin runs of red and blue paint.
The palette contrasts near-black ground with the chalky white of the veil and warm ochre tones on the hand and visible brow, creating a strong, almost sculptural light. Paint is dragged and scraped thickly, with drips left visible, giving the surface a raw, unresolved texture. The tightly cropped, faceless pose reads as an image of private, overwhelming mourning.
