About this work
A single head and shoulders fill the canvas, the face turned slightly with heavy-lidded eyes looking down and lips pressed shut. Light falls unevenly across the forehead and cheek while the jaw, neck and clothing sink into near-black shadow, leaving the features only partly resolved.
The palette is restricted to teal, ultramarine and near-black, with chalky white-grey used sparingly to model the lit planes of the face. Thick, worked brushstrokes are visible throughout the surrounding blue passages, and the single harsh light source lends the portrait an introspective, unsettled mood.
