About this work
The bowed head of Christ fills the canvas, crowned with a thick wreath of long thorns and framed by tangled, matted hair falling past the shoulders. One eye looks down into shadow while the brow and cheekbone catch a narrow band of light, the expression heavy with pain and resignation.
Thick ridges of ochre, burnt sienna and near-black brown are built up with a palette knife, the pigment left raw and unblended so the face emerges from a rough, sculptural surface. Deep shadow swallows the background, leaving the illuminated features to carry the whole mood of quiet suffering.
