About this work
Densely hatched towers and rooftops crowd the upper half of the sheet, folding and splitting along jagged cracks as if the whole city is being wrenched apart. Above the skyline, thick swirling strokes suggest turbulent cloud and smoke; below it, a scattering of small running figures, some carrying belongings, flee across an open plain toward the lower edge of the composition.
The scene is rendered almost entirely in fine black ink hatching over pencil, with only faint ochre and pink washes tinting parts of the sky and figures. The obsessive linework building the collapsing architecture, contrasted with the sparse, pale ground where the crowd runs, produces a dramatic sense of citywide catastrophe.
