About this work
A weathered wooden frame encloses a grid of aged, striped grey-mauve panels like old piano keys. Rusted metal rods and bent nails project inward from all four edges like a ring of spikes, while at the centre a rough, blackened mound cradles a pale sculpted face with hollow eyes, a turquoise rivulet running down from its brow like a tear.
Oil paint, sculpted material and actual rusted metal are combined directly on the board, giving real physical relief rather than illusionistic depth. The palette stays close to weathered grey, ochre and rust, broken only by the turquoise streak, and the encrusted surfaces and cage of spikes give the piece an unsettling, relic-like presence.
