About this work

A colossal furrowed face fills the center of the composition, framed on both sides by tiered clusters of onlookers: two women in the foreground, bearded elders behind them, and a small head peering up from the lower corner. Between the flanking groups, dark silhouetted arms reach toward a small nude child balanced on a sword laid horizontally across the base of the scene.

Dense cross-hatching builds deep black shadow around the pale, deeply lined face, while the surrounding figures are rendered in flatter graphic contrasts of white paper and near-black ink. The disparity in scale between the towering visage and the small huddled figures creates a tense, theatrical charge suited to a scene of judgment and impending loss.
