About this work
A monumental rock, cleaved in two, dominates the sheet: its left half is a chaotic relief of intertwined nude bodies, limbs and faces merging within the stone's grain, while its right half remains a bare, smoothly modeled cliff face. At lower right, two minuscule schematic figures stand on cracked, weed-strewn ground, dwarfed by the boulder looming above them.
Dense, meticulous etched hatching plays velvety blacks against sharply lit whites, giving the rock a glowing, almost molten surface. The entangled bodies are drawn with the same obsessive linework as the stone itself, blurring flesh and mineral, and the extreme scale contrast between boulder and onlookers creates an oppressive, dreamlike grandeur.
